Glentaggart East Occupation

Commenting on reports that protestors from Coal Action Scotland have occupied the site of Scottish Coal’s planned open cast mine near Douglas, Clydesdale MSP Aileen Campbell said:

“I understand that Coal Action Scotland have occupied the site and plan a period of protest.  My priority is with my constituents in the area and I will continue to ensure their voices are heard.

“It is vitally important that South Lanarkshire Council and Scottish Coal engage constructively with local residents, listen to their concerns and keep them up-to-date with developments and how it will impact on the area.

“The coal industry is an important employer in rural South Lanarkshire and has a long history in the area.  Coal still has a role to play in the energy mix while Scotland makes its transition to a low-carbon economy."
