Campbell Disappointed Olypmic Torch will Bypass Clydesdale

Clydesdale MSP, Aileen Campbell has expressed disappointment following the announcement of the route the London 2012 Olympic torch will take through Scotland revealed Clydesdale’s omission from the itinerary.

While the torch relay will circle much of Scotland from Stranraer to Shetland, the MSP has expressed regret that most of South Lanarkshire, apart from the north-west tip at Rutherglen, and the whole of Clydesdale has been missed out.

Commenting, Aileen Campbell said:

“No one can deny that the Olympic Games is going to be a huge event and I know communities the length and breadth of Scotland will be glad to see the torch relay stopping by them.  However, it is disappointing that most of South Lanarkshire - with the exception of Rutherglen – and Clydesdale has been missed out of the itinerary.

“A huge amount of work needs to be done to illustrate the benefits of the Olympics beyond London and this tour was part of that.

“But regardless of people’s views about the games, it would be a fantastic opportunity for local people to get to carry the torch through one of Clydesdale’s towns.  For Lanarkshire, it would have been a great way to carry on the tremendous success that was the International Children’s Games.

“I will be writing to the organisers to see if there is any way for Clydesdale to get a spur off the main route so that the Olympic torch can pay a visit.”
