Campbell Welcomes Biggar Archaeology Exhibition to the Scottish Parliament

Aileen Campbell, SNP MSP for South of Scotland, welcomed the Biggar Archaeology Exhibition to the Scottish Parliament this week (28th June - 2nd July).

The MSP sponsored the exhibition in the parliament, which has allowed the group to display their work and discoveries in the area from the past thirty years to MSPs and Scottish Parliament staff.

The Biggar Archaeology Group, led by Tam Ward, has been running since 1981 and has made a series of significant discoveries and excavations in the Upper Clyde and Tweed rivers, including the discovery of the oldest human habitation in Scotland at the Howburn site in 2005.  They have also developed museum exhibits and educational resources, all of which has enabled residents to gain a better understanding of the area’s rich pre-historic past.

Speaking at the Biggar Archaeology Exhibition Stall in the parliament, Aileen Campbell MSP said:

“I was extremely pleased to be able to sponsor the Biggar Archaeology Exhibition stall in the Scottish Parliament this week.  And I thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the Biggar Big Dig last year and finding some buried treasure – a bit of an axe head which turned out to be 5,000 years old!

“The Biggar Archaeology Group has undertaken excellent work surveying and excavating the area’s pre-historic past over the last thirty years and it was great they were able to display their findings in the parliament.   Tam works so hard with this group, so it was a wonderful opportunity to allow MSPs to see this at first hand.

“The group has made some significant discoveries, which is a credit to the excellent work of these dedicated volunteers.  And I hope the group goes from strength to strength.”
