| Campbell Calls For Caution on Clyde Windfarm Extension |
|
Aileen Campbell, SNP MSP for South of Scotland, has called for a cautious approach to a proposed extension to the Clyde Windfarm at Abington. Construction of 152 turbine wind farm is currently underway at the site, and developers SSE Renewables have now launched a ‘pre-application consultation’ about a potential extension to the site. Aileen has responded to the proposals, urging caution and full consultation with all affected communities, and encouraged local residents to do the same. Commenting, Aileen Campbell MSP said: "This proposal raises a whole series of concerns and I would suggest a very cautious approach to taking it forward. It took a lot of work to bring the community on board for the windfarm currently under construction – already one of the largest in the country. "I’ve contacted SSE Renewables expressing concern at the speed with which this extension has been proposed, and asking for clarification about the number of turbines which might be involved, the impact on the community development funds, the process for wider consultation, and an idea of the timescale for the proposals. "The local community must be fully involved in this process, and their views properly taken account of. Local people have had the good grace to accept the original windfarm, and recognise that we all have role to play in tackling climate change even if that means accepting the impact of renewable energy on our doorsteps. At the same time, it must be demonstrated that power companies are acting in the best interests of the environment, and not simply looking at their bottom line. "I would encourage anyone with an interest or view on these proposals to contact SSE Renewables, and to attend the public exhibition on the proposals planned to be held in the Abington Hotel on Wednesday 9th June from 3pm to 7pm."
