CAMPBELL'S CONCERN AT JUBILEE HALL RENTS INCREASE

Aileen Campbell, SNP MSP for South of Scotland, has spoken out against potential price hikes in the cost of hall lets for users of Lesmahagow’s Jubilee Hall.

Representatives of user groups have contacted Aileen expressing their concern that, while they had expected to pay increased rates for the replacement facilities should the closure go ahead, they were not expecting large increases for the current lets.  Some groups are concerned that flat-rates for evening bookings will be replaced by more expensive hourly charges.

Commenting, Aileen Campbell MSP said:

“Any increase in charges will be another blow to the users of the Jubilee Hall, many of whom give their time voluntarily to provide activities and recreational opportunities for the wider community.

“Cuts to Scotland’s budget by the UK Government are making tough decisions necessary – but the Council needs to carefully consider the consequences of pricing users out of the Hall.

“The various clubs and societies help to keep young people off the streets and older members of the community healthy and active.  Increased rents could force these groups to scale back or close down risks anti-social behaviour and isolation, both of which end up costing society much more.

“The Council will also lose revenue if wedding bookings and similar events go elsewhere because the hall becomes too expensive.

“I have been in contact with the council to seek clarity on this issue.  I hope the Council can be persuaded to engage meaningfully with the community in Lesmahagow and ensure they have access to affordable, quality meeting and activity space for the many wonderful groups who currently use the Jubilee Hall.”
