Campbell Welcomes Perth's Support for Lanark's Centenary Airshow

Aileen Campbell, SNP MSP for South of Scotland, has welcomed Perth’s support for Lanark’s Centenary Airshow celebrations in a Member’s Debate in the Scottish Parliament yesterday [Thursday 25th February].

Speaking in a Member’s Debate supporting Perth 800, which is a year long-celebration of the town's eight hundreds years as a Royal Burgh and part of a campaign to gain city status, Aileen Campbell MSP said:

“It is good to see mention of another royal burgh, Lanark, in the [Perth] fair city guide, because 2010 is also a special year for Lanark, as it marks the centenary of aviation week. That was Scotland's first air show, and was held in Lanark.

I have been working with organisers in Lanark — Ed Archer and Sylvia Russell — who hope to mark that occasion in Lanark. However, because of the absence of an airfield there, they have been working with the aerodrome in Perth.

The drome will be home to the centenary show, which makes up part of the Perth 800 celebrations. The 1910 version of the air show had a huge impact in Lanark, so I look forward to enjoying the show and celebrations when they happen in Perth and Lanark.

Speaking outside the chamber after the debate, Aileen Campbell MSP said:

“Though it is unfortunate that Lanark is unable to hold its own commemorative airshow, it is great news that my hometown Perth is able to help the 1910 airshow celebrations.

“I am also really pleased that in the Scottish Parliament today, I was able to recognise the hard work of the Lanark Airshow committee and how much everyone in Lanark and the surrounding area is looking forward to the centenary events.”
