Funding a Recipe for Success, Says Campbell

Aileen Campbell, SNP MSP for South of Scotland, has welcomed the news that the Scottish Government is to invest over £250,000 to help educate children on the benefits of eating fresh, seasonal food, how it’s produced and career opportunities within the food chain.

This new drive by the Scottish Government will invest in a variety of projects for schools including:
  •  Funding for the Royal Highland Education Trust to get 1800 primary school pupils involved in food and farming visits over the next 12 months.
  • Farmers' market schools pilot.
  • Backing for the Scottish Food and Drink Federation's national programme to educate more pupils about the industry and consider it as a career choice.
  • Work with Learning and Teaching Scotland to provide additional support for teachers and pupils through Curriculum  for Excellence.

Speaking about the government’s latest educational funding, Aileen Campbell MSP said:

“I am a big supporter of using local and seasonal food and I believe it is extremely important that we ensure that young people in Scotland know the benefits eating local, fresh and seasonal produce can bring to their health, the environment and the local economy.

“In my role as MSP for South of Scotland, I have been lucky enough to sample a wide range of our fantastic produce such as Clyde Valley apples.  I have also seen first-hand the benefits and enjoyment children have in learning about their local food and where it comes from, and I'm glad to see that the Royal Highland Education Trust, who have had stalls at local agricultural shows, are involved in this government initiative.

“I hope schools in the Clydesdale area will take full advantage of this funding and ensure our children learn about the food they eat from plough to plate.
